Both Labor and the Coalition parties in the state of Victoria have announced an increase in funding for abortions if they win government at the state election to be held on 28 November 2026.
On 15 October 2026 the Labor party's Ben Carroll announced it will spend $30 million over four years - committing up to $1,000 per abortion - which Victorian taxpayers would fund.
There will be expanded fuel and accommodation subsidies for women travelling from rural areas for abortions.
The deadline for the use of medical abortions will be expanded from 9 weeks to 10 weeks with a further clinical review to potentially increase it to 12 weeks.
The $30 million pledge is expected to support an estimated 23,000 medical and surgical abortions a year.

Victorian Opposition Leader Jess Wilson said an elected coalition government would match Labor’s commitment to cover out of pocket expenses for abortions up to 16 weeks gestation.
The coalition will not match Labor’s plan to extend medical abortions from 9 weeks to 10 weeks gestation nor fund a clinical review into offering it up to 12 weeks.
In other words – both parties plan to increase funding and access to more killing of Victoria’s unborn children!
Right to Life Australia works nationally to uphold the right to life of all human beings from conception until natural death.
We oppose the intentional killing of every unborn child who has an inalienable right to life and must be protected at all stages of gestation.
The funding by Victorian taxpayers to kill even more unborn children in this state is abhorrent.
We are reminded of the words of our foundress Margaret Tighe, as President addressing a crowd of 10,000 at the Rally for Life in Treasury Gardens, Melbourne on 27 March 1977:
“In this place babies are being put to death because their only crime is that they are alive and growing.”
“A nation that tolerates the killing of its offspring and is unable to preserve the unique value of human life, is doomed to disintegrate.”

The Right to Life Australia Inc. defends the right to life of all human beings from conception until natural death. We lobby government for legal protection of the most vulnerable in society – the unborn baby, elderly, sick and those with disabilities.
