Current federal law (Criminal Code Act 1995) mandates contact between doctor and patients (in relation to assisted suicide and euthanasia ) MUST be in person.
The Australian Labor Party (ALP) adopted a policy at the recent national conference (25/26 July 2026) to allow assisted suicide and euthanasia by telehealth consultations.
Now, Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Teal Independent Kate Chaney MP intend to introduce private members’ bills to remove this vital safeguard.
Prime Minister The Hon. Anthony Albanese MP said he did not support tele-health consultations. He said: “…. Now, if someone has a heart attack or an acute health condition, they need a doctor. They can’t do that over telehealth and I think.. someone ending their life is just as important and I think it should be face-to-face recognition and face-to face engagement …”… “My concern is .. the potential for ‘’misuse’’ but also the potential it has to undermine the system in itself.” [1]
Federal Attorney-General Hon Michelle Rowland MP is concerned: “I am personally not convinced that a person confronting an end-of-life decision shouldn’t be afforded the dignity of a person face-to-face consultation with a medical practitioner.”[2]

Please vote NO to enabling ill and vulnerable patients to access assisted suicide and euthanasia via telehealth.
All significant medical procedures are approved with doctor-in-person appointments and physical examination. This principle should especially apply to a life-ending medical intervention.
This is confirmed by Australian Medical Specialist Dr John Daffy (Australian Care Alliance) who expressed extreme concern. “Through in-person consultation you get to know patients … pick up on their unspoken body language, which can’t be ascertained through the internet. …you’re talking about people killing themselves … and it would seem inappropriate to do it via telehealth.” (4/5/24)
Whether living in cities, rural or remote locations all Australians are entitled to doctor-in-person visits for all critical health care decisions - this should be our priority, not dismantling vital safeguards.
